About

Mentoring for Effective Teaching program

The Mentoring for Effective Teaching (MET) program offers world-class professional learning for teachers wanting to become mentors to early-career teachers. For over a decade, the two-day MET has been delivered to more than 30 Australian institutes with over 4,000 MET facilitators trained. In addition, MET has been refined and delivered internationally to universities in other countries such as the US, China, Italy, and the Philippines.

As a train-the-trainer program, MET continues to have considerable influence and impact. For instance, a deputy principal from an Education Queensland state school, who was trained as a MET facilitator, took 18 dedicated teaching staff through the two-day MET program over a weekend. The deputy principal later wrote in an email,

“I truly believe this program has had an impact on the way teachers will mentor in the future. It also had the added benefit of encouraging them to reflect on their own practices and hopefully build mentoring relationships within our staff in the future”.

The New South Wales Institute of Teachers, BOSTES, and now NESA have endorsed MET professional learning program for teachers at the highly accomplished career stage.

As a key component of a significant project, the MET program received a Commonwealth citation award in 2012 and a coveted national program award in 2013. MET is based on a researched-based five factor model that emanated from research studies on mentoring in education. The emphasis is on teaching in the classroom and student differentiated learning.

The mentoring model can be focused on specific subject areas (e.g., English, mathematics, science, dance, drama).
